Disney's latest and possibly greatest film just hit theaters about one month ago, and, after a lengthy vacation, I'm back and ready to review Zootopia.
Zootopia was released in the United States on March 4, 2016. It was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore and starred Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, and J.K. Simmons.
I have seen a lot of Disney films in my almost-13 years, and, I have to say, this may be one of the best films I have seen out of all of them. It's definitely in my Top 10 list of Disney films, that's for sure.
I'll start this review off with the plot. It was absolutely fantastic, with lots of mystery and suspense as Judy Hops and her tagalong partner Nick Wilde try to solve a case that turns out to be bigger than it seems at first glance. My favorite part about this was the amazing plot twist at the end of the movie I was totally blindsided by. I did not see it coming at all. The whole movie dazzled me from start to finish.
Next let's talk about the cast. Ginnifer Goodwin was great as Judy Hops. She provided the perfect voice for this character. Idris Elba and J.K. Simmons were awesome as Chief Bogo and Mayor Lionheart, respectively. And then we get to Jason Bateman's Nick Wilde.
Wow.
Jason Bateman was the perfect guy to voice Nick. He had that dripping sarcasm that made me hate to love him. He absolutely killed it as Nick Wilde. He provided that same Jason Bateman comedy that we've been getting for a while now, and he delivered yet again.
The script was great, but I felt like they tried really hard to sell Shakira's Gazelle (nod to Gisele... I think, since she only made one song), and they ended up overdoing it. By the time the end credits rolled around, I liked her character, but the writers made too much of a point trying to get the audience to view her as this big celebrity, which, in real life, would not get you onto the face of every e-board in Times Square.
I loved the diversity of animals in this movie, and I greatly approve of Judy's reaction to all the "naked" animals. I would have never thought to include that, and it made me think better of this movie than I had originally did.
In short, Zootopia was a really fun movie, and one of Disney's best ever.
Final Grade: A
Next, I will be reviewing the long-awaited Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Does it live up to the hype? Find out soon. As always, comment below about your thoughts on Zootopia, and what you want to see me review next. Until next time, Baxter has left the hypothetical building.
