Pixar's latest film has been one of its most critically and financially disappointing films. What do I think of it? Well, let's just say I don't disagree.
The Good Dinosaur is the latest Pixar film, released in the United States on November 25, 2015. It was directed by Peter Sohn and starred Raymond Ochoa, Jack Bright, and Sam Elliott.
Pixar's last film before this was Inside Out. I saw that movie, and then when I saw The Good Dinosaur, the whole time I was thinking that this was no Inside Out.
First let's talk about the good things I did like about this movie. First of all, the animation was, for the most part, absolutely brilliant. Pixar continues to do a very good job with that aspect with their films.
Also, the story was great. It was very well done. All the voice actors did an applaud-worthy job, especially Sam Elliott as Butch.
The family element was very crucial in this movie, and Pixar delivered with this, successfully bringing happiness to me and everyone else I watched the movie with.
That's about it. Now let's talk about the stuff I didn't like.
First of all, this movie honestly could have been rated PG-13 for the things it did. I'll give you a set of reasons why. First of all, Arlo's father is seemingly intent on his youngest son murdering a child, albeit one who acts more like a wolf or a dog than an actual human, which is another sin in itself. We have proof from The Croods and actual science that cavemen and other people in this time period did not act anything like Spot and the other "humans" did. Also, Arlo's father got freaking killed, man! And Arlo almost drowns, practically breaks his leg, fell off a cliff, and got attacked and hunted more times than I would care to count. While Spider-Man 2 did an excellent job of ramming Peter Parker into the ground, this movie failed at it in every aspect.
At the end of the movie, there is a moment where Arlo decides to give Spot to a human family much like his own dinosaur family. Spot, after initially resisting, gives in and joins his new family, leaving Arlo alone. Just a few minutes ago, Arlo refused to give Spot to this family, insisting that he would be better off with his own family. After Arlo saves Spot from a mudslide (I'll talk about that later) he suddenly has a change of heart. It makes absolutely no sense for why Arlo does this.
Also, a mudslide killed Arlo's freaking father, who is humongous, but a mudslide that's the same size doesn't kill Arlo, a much smaller and weaker dinosaur than his dad. This also makes no sense.
The element of "what if the dinosaurs lived" was wasted here, although not completely. That particular element has such a wide variety of choices you could explore, but Pixar just didn't roll with anything, well, good.
Despite the negative moments I mentioned, the animation, voice acting, and especially the family element about balances out the bad things. While it's an okay movie in itself, it is a massive letdown from Inside Out and Disney as a whole.
Final Grade: C+
The Good Dinosaur has some bad moments but a good story, but it's a disappointing movie overall. I would recommend seeing it, but only if you're interested in Disney, dinosaurs, and not easily scared. My next review will be of the newest Disney film, Zootopia. Look for that to be up in the coming week. Comment on this article about your thoughts on this film, your favorite Pixar film, and what you want to see me review.
